What is whole-body cryotherapy?

Whole-body cryotherapy is a three-minute session in a chamber cooled to between -150°F and -165°F, with your head above the cold air the whole time.

The cold triggers a short, sharp drop in skin temperature, your blood vessels constrict, and when you step out they open back up. At Hydralive Therapy in Huntersville, a single session costs $40, a staff member stays with you from start to finish, and you are back in your car inside fifteen minutes.

Is cryotherapy right for what you've got going on?

Pick the reason you're here. Tap to open the answer.

"I trained hard and everything hurts."

This is the use case with the most research behind it. Come in within a day of the session that did the damage. Three minutes, then go about your day. If you are in a heavy block, a 5-pack covers the week.

From $40

"I've got a race in a few weeks."

Cryo two or three times a week through the build, then once in the final 48 hours. Pair it with compression in the same visit. If She Tris on 27 September or the Lake Norman 15K on 11 October is on your calendar, the unlimited membership pays for itself in seven sessions.

Unlimited cryotherapy $249/mo 20% off now

"I sit at a desk all day and I'm stiff and flat by 2pm."

Cryo at lunch. Fifteen minutes door to door, and the alertness afterwards is the part people come back for. Rosedale and Skybrook to here is under ten minutes.

From $40

"I'm on my feet twelve hours at a time."

Nurses at Novant, crews at McGuire, the race shops. Cryo after a shift, or a drip and cryo together on a day off. The $310 cryo plus IV membership was built for exactly this schedule.

Unlimited cryo + IV $310/mo

"I've heard it helps with sleep and mood."

Small studies suggest repeated sessions may help. That is a "may", and we will not pretend otherwise. Give it three or four sessions across two weeks and judge it on how you feel.

5-pack $150

"I want to lose weight."

Cryotherapy will not do that, and any page that tells you a session burns 800 calories is making it up. The plan that works lives on the medical weight loss page. Cryo can sit alongside it for recovery if you are training.

Medical weight loss

"I have no idea."

Then book the $129 first visit. You get a drip, a consult with a clinician who will ask what is going on, and a cryo session to try. That is what the consult is for.

If your only question is "which one reduces soreness the most", cold water has the better research, and we would rather tell you that than lose you later. A 2026 network meta-analysis of 51 trials found cold water immersion did best for soreness in the first 24 hours, while whole-body cryotherapy improved jump performance at 1, 24 and 48 hours and produced the largest drop in creatine kinase, a muscle damage marker, at 48 and 72 hours.

What cryo has over a plunge is time and tolerance. Three dry minutes is something people do at lunch on a Tuesday. Ten wet minutes at 45°F is something people do twice and then stop. The recovery method you will do three times a week beats the one you will do three times ever. And if you want both, do both. Cryo here, plunge at the lake when it drops below 60 in November.

What happens during a cryotherapy session.

  1. You arrive

Free parking directly outside the door at 14229 Reese Blvd.

  2. First visit: short health form and a blood pressure check

Five minutes. Cryo is not for everyone, and the check is how we find out. If it is not for you, we say so and you are not charged.

  3. You change

Dry underwear or shorts, plus the socks, gloves and slippers we hand you. No metal, no lotion, no damp skin.

  4. Three minutes in the chamber

Head above the cold, staff beside you, talking the whole time. First-timers can stop at two minutes. Anyone can stop at any second.

  5. You warm up and go

A few minutes moving gets the blood going again. No downtime. Plenty of people go straight to the office or the gym.

What to wear to cryotherapy

Dry underwear, shorts or a sports bra, and we provide the gloves, socks and slippers. Bring nothing damp. Leave jewelry, piercings and anything metal in the locker, put long hair up, and that is the whole list.

Does cryotherapy work? What the research says.

The research is real, it is still small, and it points in a few consistent directions. Every claim below links to its study.

Muscle soreness

A 2015 Cochrane review called the evidence insufficient. A 2017 review of 16 studies found muscle pain reduced in most of them, with repeated sessions doing better than one-offs. Both are right: the trials are small and the protocols vary.

Bounce-back performance

A 2026 pooled analysis found whole-body cryotherapy improved jump performance at 1, 24 and 48 hours after hard exercise and produced the largest reduction in creatine kinase, a muscle damage marker, at 48 and 72 hours.

Inflammation markers

A 2025 meta-analysis of 11 trials found short-term shifts in some markers and no change in others. That does not mean cryotherapy treats an inflammatory condition, and we do not claim it does.

Mood and sleep

A 2021 meta-analysis found preliminary evidence that repeated sessions help low mood as an add-on to normal care, and a 2024 study in Cryobiology found repeated sessions improved how well healthy young adults said they slept. Preliminary is the operative word in both.

Who should not do cryotherapy?

Please do not book if any of these apply. Talk to your doctor first instead.

  • Pregnancy
  • A pacemaker or implanted heart device
  • Heart disease, a heart attack, or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • A stroke, blood clot or DVT in the last twelve months
  • Raynaud's, cold urticaria, or any condition where cold triggers a reaction
  • Uncontrolled thyroid disease or type 1 diabetes. A treated, stable thyroid condition is usually fine; check with your doctor
  • A seizure disorder
  • An open wound, an infection, or a fever today
  • Severe claustrophobia

We check blood pressure at your first visit, and we will decline the session if it is high that day. The full contraindication list comes from the 2025 international position paper on whole-body cryostimulation, and our staff work from it.

Cryotherapy FAQs

How much does cryotherapy cost?

$40 for a single whole-body session at Hydralive Therapy in Huntersville. Packs bring it to $25 a session on a 10-pack, and unlimited membership is $249 a month on a 12-month plan. Across the US, a single session typically runs $50 to $100, so ours sits under the bottom of that range.

How long does a cryotherapy session take?

Three minutes in the chamber. Fifteen minutes door to door on a repeat visit, closer to twenty-five the first time because of the health form and blood pressure check.

Does cryotherapy hurt?

No. It is intensely cold on the skin for the first thirty seconds and then settles into a dry, prickly cold. It is nothing like an ice bath, because dry air pulls heat from the body far more slowly than water. First-timers can stop at two minutes.

Is cryotherapy safe?

For healthy adults, yes, with contraindications respected and a staff member present. Your head stays above the cold air the whole time, sessions are capped at three minutes, and blood pressure is checked at your first visit. A 2023 safety review found the documented risks are low and preventable when contraindications and time limits are followed. We offer it as a recovery and wellness service.

What do I wear to cryotherapy?

Dry underwear, shorts or a sports bra. We provide gloves, socks and slippers. Remove jewelry and anything metal. Skin must be completely dry.

How often should I do cryotherapy?

Two or three times a week is common in a training block or for ongoing stiffness. Once a week is plenty for general recovery. Members can come up to twice a day. If you lift for size, do it on rest days rather than in the hour after a session.

Does cryotherapy help with arthritis?

Some small European clinical trials reported less pain over two weeks of supervised sessions as an add-on to normal medical care. We do not treat arthritis or any other condition. Talk to your rheumatologist first.

Does cryotherapy burn calories or help with weight loss?

Your body uses extra energy rewarming after the cold, and nobody has measured that reliably enough to put a number on it. Cryotherapy earns its place as recovery on training days. If weight is the goal, a medical weight loss program is the tool, and plenty of people run both.

Cryotherapy or cold plunge?

Cold water has the stronger research for next-day soreness. Cryotherapy is three dry minutes instead of ten wet ones, which is why people keep doing it. There is no cold plunge in Huntersville, Cornelius or Davidson today.

Do you take walk-ins for cryotherapy in Huntersville?

Yes. Monday through Wednesday mornings are quietest. First visits take an extra ten minutes for the health form.

Does insurance or HSA cover cryotherapy?

Insurance does not. HSA and FSA cards usually work for wellness services like this one. Check your plan's eligible-expense list.

Can I do cryotherapy and an IV drip in the same visit?

Yes. Cryo first, then the drip, about an hour total. The $310 a month cryotherapy plus IV membership covers both.

Is my first cryotherapy session free?

With any paid service on a first visit, yes. Book a drip, an injection, a consult or compression, and the first cryotherapy session and first red light session are included.
